A magical blue light will shine in Halfweg on Saturday, May 12, after sunset. SugarFactory will light up blue to draw attention to ME. This makes the Sugar Silos part of a global chain of blue buildings and objects, from Niagara Falls to the Erasmus Bridge.
Worldwide, an estimated 17 million ME patients are missing out on life, because many patients are not even diagnosed with ME or have to wait years for clarity. This is because many doctors and practitioners lack adequate knowledge about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
World ME Day
A group of ME patients—also known from the #MillionsMissing campaigns—is therefore calling for recognition, better training for doctors, and more biomedical research on May 12 (World ME Day). The hope is that a cure can be discovered or a method developed that improves the quality of life of ME patients. ME is currently one of the diseases with the lowest biomedical research budgets.
#LightUpME
The campaign is being run under the title #LightUpME. SugarCity is also part of the global chain of blue buildings and objects on May 12. Luigi Prins, director of Cobraspen Group, developer of the SugarFactory site: "We are happy to participate in this initiative to shine blue light on the iconic silos to draw more attention to ME." #MEAction.
In blue: ME awareness
Why blue? Blue is the color of the ME Awareness ribbon. The ME initiative is linked to a call for donations. More information can be found on the Facebook pages VerlichtME
